We see her fresh, and actually a bit sensual, decorating a caprese salad or a pasta dish and you probably think it was born in Italy. But this aphrodisiac herb, symbol of love for the Romans, it is originally from India. There are more than 100 varieties of albahaca, as we call it in Spanish. It is used in the cuisines of Greece, Provence, Vietnam, Thailand, and also in Argentina and Peru, due to their important Italian influence.
Buy it fresh! But, be careful because it is fragile, so cut it delicately or remove the leaves without cutting them. Add it at end of the recipe so it does not wilt or lose its bright green color, intense aroma, and delicate flavor. Turn it into a dressing or sauce mixing it with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. Combine it with milk, spinach, fresh cheese, garlic, salt, and pepper to enjoy as a sauce for pasta, fish or shrimps. Enjoy it on a pesto sauce or make it creamy with the help of some cream cheese. On a salad, rice or risotto, stir fried, stew, tomato sauce, corn and tomato pico de gallo, proteins and even on desserts the basil plays a big role.
It is full of antioxidants, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and seems like its a good helper with intestinal problems, insomnia and to maintain a happy mood.
Grow basil at home, that way you will always have it fresh and sexy in your kitchen and if it keep us happy even better.
